Balu und Du

The mentorship project, Balu und Du, was much different than expected. I thought it would be like a "Big Brother, Big Sister" sort of deal, and to an extent it was, but it was so much more than that.
I didn't realize until I talked to a Balu, Theresa, that the program is strictly social. In no way does it relate to academics. I thought that the program's focus is great; younger children need a "big sibling" at times to be a good example and be there to encourage growth and maturity. The mentorship programs I have worked with in the US have all been strictly academic based. We aren't supposed to do anything social with the kids, only help them with their school work. I feel as if the Balu und Du project has the right idea when it comes to helping a child improve his/ her situation in life. If a child has more self- confidence, is more mature, and has a good example for everyday activities, they will behave better in class, be more confident in the classroom and in their homework, and be better off in everything that they do.
I really enjoyed being able to interact with the Balus and the Moglis. It was a rewarding experience that I would definitely like yo experience again. The relationship formed between a Balu and a Mogli is much different than anything that I have seen in a mentorship program in the US. They don't have a brother / sister relationship, but they do have a close relationship, as if they were best friends.
I really like the fact that the Balus are encouraged to keep in contact with their Mogli after the year is over. I think that this goes the extra mile in helping a Mogli and in bettering their well-being.
